Simulation and Modelling

This weeks tutorial was based on simulation and modelling. Simulations are an interactive application that allow children to use ICT to take control of thier own learning. There are many different options available and many are already based on the curriculum areas of study that you will have in your classroom. One important place to access these resources is The Learning Federation website.

It is now clear to me that the use of these simulation applications can be a very useful and effective resource to use in the classroom, and a great way to intergrate ICT.

Multimedia

Multimedia is the combination of more than one type of media. This could include text, photos, graphics, sound and video.

This week we were introduced to imovie and the many facets of this application. We began by downloading pictures for our movie from flickr and google. We placed the pictures in a sequence and implanted audio over the images. We used imovie to create a movie about how to brush our teeth successfully. If children were to create their own movie on a particular topic, they would be able to do their own resaerch, download appropriate pictures and then create their own movie meaning they would be taking control of their own learning and at the same time taking the opportunity to potentially educate others.

Hands on Data

Two examples of hands on data are spreadsheets and databases. Spreadsheets are an application that sorts, lists and represents information. There are many different applications that are capable of this process. Excel, Numbers, Google Docs and Lotus 1-2-3

Databases are another form of hands on data. A database is a location where infomation  is stored and retrieved. It is most usually made up of two or more tables. These forms of hands on data are important ways to represent and sort information.

E-Books

This weeks presentation was based on the use of e-books in the classroom. An e-book is one form of e-literature. They can include traditional literature on the screen or interactive forms. That can include image text construction too. They are not designed to replace traditional books as part of a literacy program, but only to enhance and expand on these educational experience. During the presentation we were taught how to implant pictures, movement and audio into a background that had been scanned in from a picture book. These e-books can be used in many ways in a classroom. Students may be given the opportunity to read and interact with existing e boks (that can be found on the internet) Students may also be able to create their own page in much the same way we did during the tutorial.

Going Online

The term ‘going online’ refers to anything that you do on the comuter that requires use of the internet.

This week, it was my groups presentation. We set the class the task of creating their own webpage using NVU (www.nvudev.com) The class were told that they would use information and photos provided for them to design and create a webpage about the recent Olympic Games. We began by taking the class through our resources, and then guided them through the NVU website.

I learnt a lot from presenting the class with this experience. To start, I learnt about the web authoring page NVU. That means that I am now able to take text and photos and use the sites features to create my own individual page.

I also learnt ablout what is required to publish a webpage and the fact that you must have a domain name and webserver. In addition to this, the presentation required me to learn how to save a document as a Pdf, and I know feel confident in completing this task as well.

Digital Documents

A digital document is any document that is created on a computer using software. Eg. Microsoft Word. It mat also be an image or picture. These are sometimes also referred to as ‘electronic documents’

This week, a group presented their work on Digital Documents. We were required to locate a recipe from www.taste.com.au. We then had to cut and paste the recipe into a word document. (Digital Document) we then used ‘Flickr’ to locate a picture to go with our recipe. The presentation also required us to design and format our documents.

I learnt that a simple idea like creating a class recipe book can open up multiple learning opportunities in the field of I.C.T.

I also learnt about using the Flickr website, and the ways in which to search for pictures successfully.
